The iGaming world is fast-paced and constantly evolving. The people that work in this sector often have excellent business skills, creativity, and ideas. The gambling industry offers big rewards for savvy entrepreneurs who step out of the circle and bring new ideas to life. Today we look at five unique and influential iGaming entrepreneurs.
Mark Scheinberg
Mark Scheinberg is a famous Canadian entrepreneur who co-founded the online poker giant PokerStars. After being born in Israel, he moved to Canada with his family in his teenage years. During the early stage of his career, he worked as a computer programmer and began to see the potential of the digital world.
In 2001, he partnered with his father Isai and began working on PokerStars. They created a company in Costa Rica called Rational Enterprises. On the 12th of December 2001, the site went live and began accepting real money customers.
Shortly after, they relocated to the Isle of Man for better licensing conditions. As the digital age evolved, PokerStars emerged as the leading online poker platform. The site was number one in many countries around the world and broke records for the biggest poker tournament when over 224,000 players registered to play in December 2011.
Over time, the PokerStars site grew and began diversifying by offering casino games for customers to enjoy. This cemented their place as one of the leading iGaming companies. These days, they’re featured on the best review sites, and especially those highlighting bonuses from the safest casino brands. These offers include deals from Canadian no deposit casinos, which offer fun ways to win money online with little to no risk.
In 2014, Scheinberg sold the PokerStars company to Amaya Gaming in a staggering $4.9 billion deal. This helped secure Mark’s spot on the list of richest Canadians, and in 2022 is estimated to be worth over $5.2 billion dollars.
Denise Coates
Denise Coates is the founder of Bet365, a UK-based, global iGaming brand. The business offers real money betting services, including casino games, poker, and sports betting.
The company has millions of customers across the globe and processes over $60 billion in bets each year. Denise was born into a world of betting, and joined her father’s betting shop business at a young age. Here she started learning about the industry and how it worked.
In 2000, she ventured out and started the Bet365 brand by registering the website. The growth of the internet and her knowledge of sports betting helped the company grow rapidly. Bet365 became a top bookmaker with excellent live betting features and fair odds. As the company grew, popular casino games like Baccarat, Blackjack, Craps, Jackpots, Roulette, and Slots were added.
<p>In 2022, Denise is estimated to have a net worth of over $5.5 billion dollars. Her annual salary often reaches over $400 million. After building such an impressive brand, it’s no surprise Denise is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom.
Robin Reed
Robin Eirik Reed is the CEO and founder of LiveSpins. This unique casino idea was unveiled at the iGaming NEXT conference in 2021. Robin has had an illustrious career, co-founding GiG in 2011 and building it up to $150 million in revenue. He is also the CEO of HappyHour, an established online casino. His latest venture aims to change the way online slots are played. The ‘Live Spins’ system is similar to the Bet Behind model used on table games like Baccarat and Blackjack.
Players can join the action by watching live slots streamers and bet money with them. The idea was born due to the increased restrictions in crowded places during the pandemic. With more people staying home, Robin envisioned a live slots adventure that players could get involved in. The system is yet to be released on a wide scale, so it’s hard to say how successful it will be. However, innovative ideas like this can shake the industry and help create new and exciting betting opportunities like we are seeing in Ontario.
Lawrence Escalante
Lawrence Escalante is a 40-year-old from Perth in Western Australia. In 2010, he founded a social gaming company called Virtual Gaming Worlds. Their main product was a social gaming platform called Chumba Casino.
This is a unique style of casino business, where users purchase virtual coins that can be used to play games. Players are also issued Sweep Coins, which can be exchanged for real money in Canada and the USA.
This social gaming business model was built to serve the growing demand of North American casino players. Lawrence and the team at VGW worked with lawyers to develop this special sweepstakes system that complied with US gambling laws.
Lawrence has skyrocketed onto the rich lists in Australia and around the world, after a huge surge in gaming activity and profits during the COVID-19 pandemic. VGW experienced significant growth, and in 2020-2021 recorded a total revenue of $2.2 billion, a 186% rise from the previous year. At such a young age, Lawrence is already shaking up the iGaming industry and breaking business records. He currently owns 65% of the VGW company, and has an estimated net worth of approximately $900 million.
Johann Graf
Novomatic is a global gambling company with over $1.7 billion annual revenue, 21,000 employees and offices in 45 countries. They own casinos, develop games, build slot machines, run lotteries, jackpots, and more. This gigantic company was the idea of Johann Graf, an Austrian billionaire and prominent figure on the iGaming scene.
Johann started his business by importing pinball machines from neighboring countries in Europe. After a partner left, Graf focused on gambling machines and formed the Novomatic business in 1980.
The company has continuously expanded and created subsidiaries across many sectors, acquiring related businesses to strengthen their position. This included 52% of the Australian gaming company Ainsworth, and the purchase of development studios, Greentube and Bluebat Games, to enhance the Novomatic brand and continue creating bespoke casino games.
Recently, Novomatic was honored as the Austrian Leading Company for the fourth year running, showing how important this gigantic company is to the local economy. Currently, Johann has built a net worth of approximately $7 billion dollars from his global iGaming business.
The five iGaming entrepreneurs above all showed a flair for talent in an extremely competitive industry. The businesses, products, and systems they’ve helped create have had a big impact on the iGaming industry. Their influence will pave the way for future gambling entrepreneurs to think outside the box.
