Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless was arrested in South Beach early Saturday morning after firing a gun into the ground twice following an altercation.

Tim Elfrink of the Miami New Times reports the Independence Day incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. The arrest, which came after Quarless allegedly attempted to flee the scene, was confirmed by Miami Beach PD spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported more detail on the incident:

According to the police report, Quarless produced the gun and fired two shots, one straight into the sky. One of the women later told police that Quarless fired the shots "in an attempt to emphasize his dominance and manhood."

The parking attendant called police. According to the police report, Quarless left the Porsche and tried to hide the gun in a potted plant. Police found the gun and matched the shells found at the garage with the gun.

He was officially charged with discharging a firearm in public, according to the New Times.

ESPN's Jason Wilde provided the Packers' statement on the situation, "We are aware of the matter...and are in the process of gathering more information."

"Talked to Andrew. He was here today," Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said on July 29, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We had a long conversation after his incident. It's a legal process. He made a mistake. I'm disappointed, he's disappointed. He made a mistake and we're working through it."

On July 6, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reported the Packers plan to stick by Quarless, and will not release him.

Quarless is preparing to enter his sixth season with the Packers. The Penn State product has registered 85 catches for 909 yards and six touchdowns in 55 career games. He was looking at a potentially expanded role in the offense this fall.

Packers superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he was impressed with his progress during the team's minicamp last month, as noted by Rob Demovsky of ESPN:

I think Andrew's had a great camp. He really made some jumps last year. Not enough targets for him, but I think if he keeps playing the way that he's playing right now—he's playing very fast, he's really been detailing his routes and he's been one of the top guys that's showed out in the offseason program.

Now, any progress he's made toward becoming a bigger factor for Green Bay is on hold while the legal situation plays out. Richard Rodgers is next on the depth chart should Quarless be forced to miss time as a result of the incident.
