Asante Samuel has long been critical of Bill Belichick, so he couldn't help but comment on the legendary head coach's departure from the New England Patriots this week.
Belichick and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways on Thursday after 24 seasons. He has long been praised for his coaching, but his decisions as a general manager have been questioned, especially over the last few seasons.
Speaking with TMZ Sports, Samuel warned NFL teams interested in hiring Belichick against giving him GM power.
"If any owner would give Bill Belichick that power again," Samuel said, "that would be crazy."
Samuel added that Belichick can thank legendary quarterback Tom Brady for his years of success, saying, "One man, one player determined your success."
The Patriots won 17 AFC East titles, nine AFC titles and six Super Bowl titles with Belichick at the helm, but the franchise hasn't found much success since Brady's departure after the 2019 season.
Between 2020 and 2023, the Patriots went 29-38 and missed the playoffs in three of four seasons. Things took a turn for the worse in 2023 as New England finished with a 4-13 record, its worst finish in more than a decade.
Samuel, 43, was drafted by the Patriots in 2003 and spent five seasons with the franchise, winning two Super Bowls.
Belichick is one of the hottest head coaching candidates on the market this winter and has already been linked to the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers coaching vacancies.
