What happened to Ashanti’s sister?
According to reports, Shia, Ashanti’s sister, and Slow Bucks dated for 13 years before announcing their engagement on Instagram in 2016.
It is unknown how the two first connected, but in November 2021, Shia broke her silence regarding experiencing abuse in the relationship when chatting with Angie Martinez.
Shia, Ashanti, and family matriarch Tina recounted how the family dealt with Shia’s experience of domestic violence at the hands of an ex-boyfriend on the November 22, 2022, episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk.
After the two resumed their connection, Shia’s ex-long-term boyfriend’s emotional abuse of her turned violent.
Shia continued by saying that the ex-boyfriend frequently contacted her following her physical abuse.
Shia said to Jada, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris, “He would attempt to come around with gifts,” and Tina added, “He would cry about his deeds to win Shia over.”
Shia also revealed that her ex-boyfriend threatened her before beating her, but she didn’t think her loved one would harm her until he actually did.
There were occasions when I was sleeping on my best friend’s bed, and he was actually taking pictures of me through the window and emailing them to my phone, Shia recounted.
The violence started in the final two to three years of their relationship, according to Douglas, who participated in the interview with Ashanti and her mother.
On one occasion, Ashanti related, she intervened on her own after Shia told her what was happening.
Thankfully, Shia finally made the decision to call it quits. Shia has since spoken up about her experience on social media, most notably in an Instagram post from April 2020.
With her own Domestic Violence Awareness post from October 2021, Ashanti also expressed her support and raised awareness.
