Atix Hotel Review, La Paz, Bolivia

Breakfast is served in the main restaurant, Ona, in the basement behind reception. The buffet has espresso coffee, fresh juices and fruit, warm cheesy breads, quinoa and other local cereals, and eggs can be made to order. For lunch and dinner, Ona goes full-on with new Bolivian gastronomy: sublime steaks, plus excellent fish and veggie dishes.
The Atix rooftop is home to the +591 bar, which serves a decent wine list, including Bolivian wines from the fast-improving Tarija region, and a range of mainly classic cocktails. Local Singani is the spirit to try, here prepared in a tangy sour. A small infinity pool is there more for show than swimming, but the overall tableau – with high glass walls, polished wood floors and artfully placed potted plants, and the sandy-coloured slopes of the city beyond, is striking. After dark, the dwellings on the hillsides around Zona Sur add extra sparkle.
