Beal Out At Least 2 Weeks
Saturday, Dec. 12
The Wizards announced Saturday that they would be sitting Beal for at least two weeks after discovering the "beginnings of a stress reaction in his lower right fibula."
Beal dealt with a left shoulder injury in November, which added to his lengthy injury history. Throughout his first three years in the Association, he's battled stress reactions in his right leg and a fractured wrist. He sat out Friday's loss against New Orleans as well.
Despite the injury problems already this season, Beal continued to shoot well from three-point range with a 38.9 percent success rate. His scoring output has increased to a career-high 19.8 per game, though the Wizards have struggled with a 9-12 record entering Saturday.
Along with point guard John Wall, Beal helps form half of one of the league's brightest and most lethal backcourts. Losing the 2-guard will undoubtedly cap the offense's ceiling, but Washington has depth to help soften the blow for a short time.
Jared Dudley is a multipositional wing capable of slotting in at shooting guard, while Gary Neal and Ramon Sessions can both flex into the 2 should head coach Randy Wittman choose to experiment with smaller five-man lineups.
The key for Washington will be getting Beal back soon, so the team doesn't have to think about a prolonged absence that carries into the new year in three weeks. Since the Wizards were able to find the stress fracture in the early stages, it may be more manageable and easier to keep from getting worse.
