Frodo and Sam were the two hobbits who took the one ring to Mount Doom for destruction. On the other hand, Merry and Pippin join Aragorn, Legolas, and the others in their fight against Sauron's forces. The hobbit characters names are based on their family heritage and unique first names.

1. Frodo Baggins

Frodo is the cousin and legal heir of Bilbo Baggins, the original founder of the ring from Gollum. He is adopted by the latter at the age of 21 and is given the ring when Bilbo leaves the shire.

When the council assembled to decide the fate of the ring can't agree on a ringbearer, Frodo volunteers to act as one and take the ring to Mordor. He is joined by Boromir of Gondor, Aragorn, Gandalf, Dwarf Gimli, Elf Legolas, Pippin, Merry, and Sam, who are collectively called the Fellowship.

As the journey to take the ring to Mordor progresses, Frodo starts getting corrupted by its power. He starts doubting Sam's intentions after getting manipulated by Gollum.

2. Samwise Gamgee

Samwise is surely one of the most underrated characters in the LOTR franchise. Also known as Sam, he is the gardener of Frodo and is tasked by Gandalf to protect the ringbearer during their journey to Mordor.

Sam shows extraordinary courage during the journey and even encourages Frodo to not give up hope. He saves Frodo from Shelob, a giant spider, and even carries him to the top of Mount Doom when Frodo is too weak to do so on his own.

Many sources wrongly claim that Bilbo is the only one to willingly give up the ring. While he showed remarkable courage by passing the ring to Frodo after holding it for over 60 years, he isn't the only one to do so.

When Sam mistakenly assumes Frodo to be dead, he takes the ring from him to continue the mission. However, he soon learns that the hobbit is alive.

Frodo asks for the ring back from Sam and he returns it after a moment of pause. Although Gamgee didn't keep the ring for a long period like Bilbo, he had it long enough for the signs of corruption to start showing up.

3. Meriadoc Brandybuck

Meriadoc, also known as Merry, was one of the three Hobbits to join Frodo in his journey to Mordor.

Merry's character is played by actor Dominic Monaghan in the LOTR movie trilogy. In the films, he is shown to be best friends with Penegrin.

When Frodo and Sam are separated from the rest of the fellowship, Merry goes to Minas Tirith where he serves as the squire of King Theodon.

Moreover, he develops a close friendship with Eowyn, King Theoden's niece. He also helps her kill Nazgul, the Witch-King of Angmar.

In the LOTR books, Meriadoc is portrayed as one of the most intelligent hobbits. He is said to have known the true nature of the ring even before embarking on the mission to destroy it.

Meriadoc was initially tasked with communicating the message about Frodo's mission to the residents of the Shire. However, after witnessing his loyalty and friendship with Frodo, Gandalf convinces Elrond to let him join as a member of the Fellowship.

After the ring was destroyed, Merry returned to the shire and eventually got married to Estella Bolger. He also became the Master of Buckland and led a peaceful life before passing away at the age of 102.

4. Peregrin Took

Peregrin, also called Pippin, was a hobbit from the shire and one of the nine Fellowship members. The character was played by actor Billy Boyd in Peter Jackson's movie trilogy.

Peregrin was the first cousin and best friend of Meriadoc. Like Merry, he was also a part of the Fellowship but got separated from Sam and Frodo.

Pippin was mistakenly assumed to be the ring bearer after he grabbed the Palantir and was seen by Sauron. After the incident, he was taken to Gondor by Gandalf for protection.
