Excellent cuisine is the big thing at Cliff, with an emphasis on seafood. The ground-floor restaurant, with its Art Deco scallop sconces and parquet, is the heart of the place. Choose from a well priced pre-theatre menu – €30 (£27) for three courses – or the later à la carte offering. Check out the marble-topped Oyster Bar, something of a city institution; enjoy your oysters here with an excellent pint of Guinness.

The charming Afternoon Sea, complete with a cup of lobster bisque, offers a maritime change to afternoon tea; and a leisurely Sunday lunch is also on offer. In the basement you’ll find Urchin, a fresh and sunny cocktail and tapas bar with outdoor seating. The excellent Cliff breakfast is served here during the week (in the main restaurant at weekends), with a fine eggs Benedict just one option on a smart à la carte menu.
