WASHINGTON (CNN) -- NIKE USA, Inc. is voluntarily recalling 425,000 Jordan Trunner cross-training shoes because of thin metal strips attached to their outside heels that can cause injury.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall after saying the metal strips can cut wearers.

Thin metal strips on the Trunner Bubble model has caused at least six injuries, five of which required stitches. The models involved in the recall are the Jordan Trunner Bubble, Trunner, Trunner Mid and Trunner 2000.

In February, the CPSC recalled the Jordan Trunner LX and Jordan Trunner 2000 Mid cross-training shoes for the same reason. Some Jordan Trunner models do not have the metal strip and are not part of the recall.

A Baltimore, Maryland, jail banned the shoes after guards found inmates using parts of the shoes to make weapons. Inmates were removing the metal strip and the plastic covers to make knives. While routine searches uncovered the makeshift weapons, the state commissioner of Pretrial Detention said there are no reports of the weapons being used in attacks.

The shoes were sold from July 1999 through July 2001 for between $90 and $125.

Customers can contact NIKE at (800) 344-6453 or on their Web site at to receive a free replacement pair of shoes.
