Curtis Lofton Released by Saints: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Linebacker Curtis Lofton has not missed a single game throughout his entire seven-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. He will likely take that durability to a new team in 2015.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the 28-year-old was officially released on Monday, which Lofton confirmed via text to The Times-Picayune's Katherine Terrell.    

"Lofton would have counted $9.25 million against the cap in 2015 and had a $4.5 roster bonus due in a few days. The move will save the Saints $4.25 million in 2015 or $7.25 million if Lofton is designated as a post-June 1 release," Terrell added.

While the Saints defense certainly struggled in 2014, Lofton tallied 144 combined tackles on the season but failed to notch a sack or interception.

Lofton’s greatest value is his reliability considering he played in all 16 games in each of his seven seasons. The NFL is riddled with injuries every year, but Lofton consistently takes the field and will provide depth for his new team in 2015.

However, Evan Silva of Rotoworld noted that Pro Football Focus’ advanced statistics weren’t exactly kind to Lofton last season:

Of particular worry was Lofton’s production against the run, which was likely one reason the Saints finished 29th in the league in rushing yards allowed per game.

They will look to improve on that in 2015 after releasing Lofton.
