Dan Hicks is an American singer-songwriter known for his unique blend of musical styles, including jazz, country, folk, swing, and more. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1941, Hicks started playing drums in grade school and later joined local dance bands in high school. He went on to study broadcasting at San Francisco State College.
In 1965, Hicks joined the band The Charlatans, which released an album in 1969. He then formed Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks in 1968, and the band went on to record three albums. Hicks even appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
Some of Hicks’ best-known songs include “Canned Music” and “I Scare Myself.” He’s also known for incorporating humor into his music, as seen in the song “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?” Hicks’ latest album, Live at Davies, was released in 2013.
