Early Life and Education
Daya, born Grace Martine Tandon, grew up in Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was born on October 24, 1998, and is of Indian descent through her paternal grandfather. Daya has four siblings and attended St. Bernard School before graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School. She began learning piano at the age of three and continued to study jazz piano at the age of eleven. Daya also plays guitar, ukulele, saxophone, and flute. During summers, she attended Interlochen Arts Camp to study songwriting.
At the age of 11, Daya enrolled at the Accelerando Music Conservatory in Pittsburgh. It was there that she met songwriter and producer Gino Barletta, who later founded the music camp Inside Access and invited Daya to attend. While at Inside Access, Daya began working on original material.
Daya’s Music Career
Daya, whose stage name means compassion in Sanskrit, began recording music after attending Inside Access camp. Her debut single “Hide Away” was written and recorded during a recording session at Paramount Recording Studios and was well-received online and by critics. She released her self-titled six-track EP digitally in September 2015, and it debuted at number 161 on the Billboard 200. In 2016, she toured with Jack & Jack and was featured on The Chainsmokers’ hit “Don’t Let Me Down,” which won a Grammy Award. Daya also released her second single, “Sit Still, Look Pretty,” which debuted at number 100 before peaking at number 28. She then performed at the 2016 White House Easter Egg Roll. In 2017, Daya worked on the song “Feel Good” and released a new single called “New.” In 2019, she released five singles before releasing “First Time” in October 2020, which appeared on her EP “Differences.”
Daya’s Relationship and Musical Inspiration
Daya publicly came out as bisexual in October 2018 for National Coming Out Day. She confirmed in April 2021 via Instagram that she had been in a relationship with her girlfriend, Clyde Munroe, for three years. Daya released the single “Bad Girl,” which was inspired by her relationship with Munroe.
