Don LaFontaine was an American voice actor who recorded over 5,000 film trailers and hundreds of thousands of television advertisements, network promotions, and video game trailers. At the time of his death in 2008, he had a net worth of $80 million dollars.
LaFontaine was born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1940 and enlisted in the United States Army after graduating high school. He worked as a recording engineer for the Army Band and Chorus before becoming a renowned voice actor.
LaFontaine became known for his catchphrase “In a world…” which was used in numerous movie trailers. He was also nicknamed “Thunder Throat” and “The Voice of God”.
LaFontaine lent his voice to trailers for every major film studio, including notable movies such as “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”, “Shrek”, “Friday the 13th”, “Law & Order”, and “Batman Returns”. He had a near-monopoly on movie trailer voiceovers for a time.
LaFontaine died in 2008, six days after his 68th birthday, due to complications from a pneumothorax.
