Callum Wilson is “rundown” following his illness and Newcastle United need to “protect” him but the forward will be fit for the World Cup, if selected by England.

Kieran Trippier, who is sure to go to Qatar, is also fine, insists Eddie Howe, despite appearing to receive treatment for his hamstring during the 4-1 victory at Southampton.

Wilson departed at half-time at St Mary’s feeling lightheaded, having been ill last week, and, although he is unlikely to feature during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup third-round tie with Crystal Palace at St James’ Park tomorrow night, he should be available to face Chelsea on Saturday.

“Callum’s OK. He’s been feeling an illness for a few days so a little bit rundown,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.

“We’ll see how he is again today. He’s been unwell and slightly under the weather, that’s been evident, so we need to look after him, protect him and make sure he gets his full strength back before he gets on the pitch.”

Aside from Wilson, Howe expects to have the rest of the squad he took to Southampton available against Palace and he is likely to make changes to his side. Trippier may well be one player who is rested.

“We think so, no problems with Kieran,” Howe said. “It looks probably more than it is when a physio comes out on to the pitch. During the second half he was fine and it was my decision to take him off.”
