Gallagher started his career as a road manager for Jim Stafford before trying out comedy in California. He appeared on various TV shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and released numerous comedy specials like “An Uncensored Evening,” which was the first stand-up special to air on cable. Gallagher performed over 3,500 live shows during his five-decade career.

In 1999, Gallagher faced criticism for using offensive stereotypes about Mexicans during a performance. He also faced accusations of his comedy being homophobic and racist, which he walked out of an interview with Marc Maron when asked about it. Due to the nature of his act, audience members sometimes sustained injuries, and he was sued by a woman who was hit on the head by a plush penguin with a fire extinguisher inside it during a show. However, the jury sided with Gallagher, and the judge called the trial “entertaining.”

Marriages and Health Issues

Gallagher married Deedra Kay Higgins in 1980 and later divorced. He then married Geralyn Ann Hines in 1988 and also divorced. Gallagher had two children, Aimee and Barnaby. In March 2011, he collapsed onstage after a minor heart attack during a performance in Minnesota. A year later, he suffered from chest pains after a show in Texas and was placed in a medically induced coma due to a “mild to serious” heart attack. He had two coronary stents replaced. Shortly after his release from the hospital, Gallagher had another mild heart attack.

Gallagher Brothers and the Sledge-O-Matic Routine

In the early ’90s, Gallagher’s brother, Ron, received permission to perform shows using the Sledge-O-Matic routine. However, Gallagher insisted that Ron clarify that the act was Ron Gallagher, not Leo Gallagher, when promoting the shows.

Despite this, Ron later began calling his act Gallagher Two or Gallagher Too, sometimes promoting it in a way that was unclear that he wasn’t the more famous Gallagher. Gallagher eventually asked his brother to stop using the Sledge-O-Matic routine, but after Ron refused to comply, Gallagher sued him for false advertising and trademark violations.

The courts ruled against Ron, ordering him to stop performing any act in which he impersonated his brother.

Gallagher Passes Away at 76

On November 11, 2022, comedian Gallagher passed away at his home in Palm Desert, California. He had been receiving hospice care prior to his death at the age of 76. Gallagher’s death was caused by organ failure, which was reportedly a result of the heart attacks he had suffered in previous years.
