Maria was the stepmother and matriarch of the Trapp Family Singers. She became the pioneer in bringing out the musical abilities in members of the Trapp family and the woman continues to live in the Hollywood minds even after her passing.
Maria and her husband Georg Von Trapp lived together for decades before writing her experiences in the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
Following its publication, the memoir has become one of the most inspiring and incredible stories which have been reflected by multiple films and plays. Seven years after its publication, it became the inspiration for the German film The Trapp Family. Eventually, the story was used as the basis of the film The Sound of the Music in 1965 which still freshens up the audience as one of the best films of all time.
However, in this article, we take a step back from the film and discuss the personal life and history of Maria Von Trapp and the Trapp family in usual.
How Old Was Maria Von Trapp When She Married?
Maria Von Trapp was just 22 years old when she married the Georg Von Trapp in 1927. Georg was the Austro-Hungarian Navy.
She entered the Trapp family as a tutor for one of George's seven children. His second oldest daughter Maria was suffering from scarlet fever and the 21-year-old woman entered the house as caretaker and teacher in 1926.
In a short time, she grew pretty close to the children as she looked after all of them even though she joined to look after only one. Around a year later, after the children convinced her to marry the man of the family, Maria with consultation from her mother abbess decided to tie the knot with Georg in 1927 so that she could be closer to the kids.
According to Archives, the late woman has previously revealed that she didn't love Georg but loved the children. So Maria didn't actually marry the man but his seven kids. The two remained married for around 20 years.
Was Maria Von Trapp Really A Nun?
Maria Von Trapp became a nun after being inspired by a well-known priest Father Kronseder.
She heard the father preach for the first time when she accidentally entered the college church while she was intending to go to a Bach concert. After being overwhelmed by the church session and hearing the priest, she had a change in her belief.
Eventually, Maria joined the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg where she inherited the duties and responsibilities of a nun. It was during her time as a nun that she went to the Trapp family as a governess.
