Gina Yashere was born in Bethnal Green, East London, to Nigerian parents; her parents had emigrated from Benin City, Nigeria. Gina's mother was a head teacher back in her home, and her father was an academic.

When they emigrated to England, their experience and social status were not appreciated, as her mother only got menial jobs. As her mom was not getting any high-paying jobs, she started her own business.

Her father went back to Nigeria when Gina was young, and they only met when she had a comic show in the country. She has two older brothers. 

She had a difficult childhood due to her social status and being a woman of color. During primary school, she was beaten by a man because he saw her leaning on his car. Later, her mom filed for a private prosecution against the assault.

 In secondary school, she reinvented herself and called herself by her first name, Regina. But that didn't stop a fellow student from calling her names; she was enraged and pushed the girl into the wall and beat her up. Due to her actions, Gina was expelled from the school.

Sixteen-year-old Gina thought her future was destroyed, so she overdosed, and luckily the doctors saved her. She passed her nine O-levels and her old school wanted her back, but Yashere went somewhere else for her A-Levels.

Yashere changed herself for the second time, and this time she wasn't called any names, and with her new look and confidence, she completed her studies. After her A-levels, she worked as a lift technician and became the first woman engineer at Canary Wharf.
