Special counsel Jack Smith is the reason behind Trump classified documents allegation
In November 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to investigate whether Trump or his aides committed the alleged crimes.
The focus of the investigation was on the alleged act of taking classified documents to Mar-a-Lago after Trump left the White House, as well as potential obstruction of the investigation.
Surprisingly, the probing and inspection have recently intensified, with important interviews conducted and a former White House official providing information to prosecutors.
According to recent updates, Trump knew the exact process for declassifying documents and periodically followed it perfectly during his time in office.
This contradicts Trump’s claims that he automatically declassified everything he took to Mar-a-Lago.
CNN reported earlier this week that the Justice Department had notified Trump’s legal team that he is a prime target in the investigation.
The ongoing investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith into allegations imposed on Donald Trump mishandling classified documents has reached a significant development.
To the Republican Party’s dismay, the former president has been indicted and is now facing 37 felony counts, which include charges related to the intentional retention of national defense information.
The court made the indictment public on Friday.
Additionally, the court indicted Walt Nauta, Trump’s aide, as part of the investigation.
This marks the first time in history that a former president is facing federal charges.
Smith said at a news conference Friday, June 9, 2023, “Our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States, and they must be enforced. Violations of those laws put our country at risk.”
The Associated Press posted the clip from Smith’s historical speech on their Twitter account.
