Lewis was originally born as Joseph but decided to go by Jerry in order to avoid confusion with Joe E. Lewis, a comedian, and Joe Louis, a boxer. He attended Irvington High School, where he was known for pulling pranks, until he dropped out during his tenth grade year.

By age 15, Lewis had developed his own mime act and was performing in New York clubs. In 1945, he met singer Dean Martin and the duo quickly rose to national prominence with appearances on TV and radio shows. They signed with NBC in 1950 and appeared in films together, including “My Friend Irma” and “The Stooge.” However, their partnership eventually strained and they split in 1956. Lewis went on to have a successful solo career, recording albums and performing in theaters and clubs. Lewis made his directorial debut in 1960 with “The Bellboy” and went on to direct, write, and star in “The Nutty Professor” in 1963. He excluded their children from inheriting his estate. Lewis married Sandra Pitnick in the same year and remained married for 34 years until his death.

Lewis suffered from several health problems and illnesses, including addiction to Percodan, heart problems, prostrate cancer, diabetes, and pulmonary fibrosis. He died in 2017 at the age of 91 from cardiac and peripheral artery disease, leaving his entire estate to his second wife and their daughter.
