Clausen, 28, was drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers but flopped during his rookie season. He spent the next three seasons as a backup in Carolina before joining the Bears in 2014, where he was Jay Cutler's backup for two years. He appeared in just six games and threw for 407 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing just 55.7 percent of his passes in Chicago.

Clausen didn't exactly shine with the Bears, though Chicago cut him because it wanted to promote quarterback David Fales to the active roster to protect him from other teams who might have signed him—not because Clausen's play was too poor to justify retaining him, per the Chicago Tribune's Rich Campbell.

While he isn't a long-term starting option in the NFL, Clausen is a reliable veteran who will provide the Ravens with a competent backup to Matt Schaub after they lost starter Joe Flacco for the season with an ACL and MCL tear. Certainly, Clausen can step into the starting role in relief duty and keep his team competitive if called upon to do so in what appears to be a lost season for the 3-7 Ravens.
