He formed a metal band, Ekhymosis, in the late 80s and released five albums that were popular in Colombia but did not find success beyond the border. After the group disbanded in 1998, Juanes launched a successful solo career and has since released five studio albums. He has won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards and 21 Latin Grammy Awards.

Juanes’ early life in Colombia was marked by violence, as he grew up during the height of the Medellin Cartel. He used music as an escape and became interested in the work of Metallica.
