After a dominant run in New Japan Pro-Wrestling that saw him hold the IWGP world heavyweight title on seven occasions, Okada signed with AEW in March and appeared on the March 6 episode of Dynamite.
While The Rainmaker was primarily a beloved babyface in Japan, he shocked the wrestling world by attacking Eddie Kingston, aligning himself with The Young Bucks and turning heel.
Just two weeks after his debut as a contracted AEW star, Okada had his first singles bout, facing Kingston in a match for the Continental Championship.
Okada was victorious, quickly making him a champion in AEW, and breaking up the Triple Crown Championship in the process.
Pac, who previously held the All-Atlantic Championship and the AEW world trios titles, had been out of action for months before returning in March to save Kingston and Penta El Zero Miedo from an attack a the hands of Okada and The Young Bucks.
That led to Pac laying down a challenge to Okada for the continental title, and Okada accepted it on the April 10 episode of Dynamite.
Okada's acceptance seemed to be a well-laid trap, as he and The Young Bucks attacked Pac and also took out FTR when they attempted to even the odds.
In addition to The Bucks stunning Pac with an EVP Trigger, Okada put on the finishing touches by hitting him with a steel chair.
While Pac posed a tough challenge and was a great first pay-per-view opponent for Okada, there was little doubt that The Rainmaker would come out on top, and that is exactly what he did.
