Sierra Leone is the current favorite to win this year's Derby, and it isn't difficult to see why.
The three-year-old colt, trained by one-time Derby winner Chad Brown, has been the hottest horse in the sport over the last year.
He has won three of his last four races, including the Risen Star Stakes and Blue Grass Stakes. Those two victories catapulted him and jockey Tyler Gaffalione to the top of the prep race standings with 155 points.
It is not out of the realm of possibility for an unfancied mount to come from nowhere to edge out the favorite in the Derby.
We saw it a year ago, with underdog Mage racing to the front of the pack and earning a surprise victory. Dornoch is an entrant who could replicate that outcome this year, especially as the only horse in the field with a victory over the favorite.
Still, Sierra Leone has momentum on his side and a great team around him, making a win more likely than not.
