Kim Jong Un’s sister’s husband is the son of one of the secretive state’s most powerful officials. 

Kim Yo Jong’s marriage to Choe Song – the son of an influential North Korean official – has been largely kept out of the public eye. 

However, the fact that it went ahead at all is an indication of how highly regarded she is in the secretive state. 

Little information has come to light about her husband beyond his powerful heritage, so much remains unknown about their union and even how long it has been going on for. 

What is clear, though, is that Kim Yo Jong’s impressive reputation and her high-level position within North Korea’s government suggest that her marriage to Choe Song will be one that carries great importance in the region’s political affairs.

Ms. Kim, who holds several titles in the North Korean government, is often seen by her brother’s side during important events in the one-party state.

As the nominal head of the North’s propaganda and agitation department, she has risen to prominence in recent years and has acted as a confidante and advisor to her brother, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. 

She was present at all three face-to-face meetings between then-President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, and has even begun signing off on official government statements criticising the U.S. and South Korea.

Meanwhile, a recent report suggests that North Koreans are secretly resentful of Kim Jong Un’s young daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who appears to be well-fed while others in the country starve. 

Residents have noticed her plump cheeks during her public appearances with her father and have compared her appearance to that of other children in their neighborhoods who struggle to eat. 

There has been speculation that Kim Ju Ae maybe her father’s successor, as state media have referred to her as his “most beloved” or “respected” child and have published images showing how close she is with him. 

However, South Korean officials believe it is too early to determine whether she will be the next leader.

The food shortage in North Korea is a major concern, with North Korean officials estimating an annual rice shortage of 800,000 metric tons and a recent United Nations report indicating that 60% of North Koreans dealt with food insecurity by the end of 2021. 

Despite this, Kim Jong Un has called on his country to be ready to launch a nuclear attack to deter war, accusing the U.S. and South Korea of carrying out military drills with American nuclear assets. 

His recent remarks came after North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward the sea, and he emphasized the urgent need for the country to bolster its nuclear war deterrence.

Exploring the life of Kim Yo Jong

Following a more-than six month long silence, Kim Yo Jong released a scathing statement in April 2022 against the South Korean defense minister, who had made remarks which challenged Pyongyang’s military capabilities. 

Ever since then, she has been a vocal critic of South Korea’s new administration as well as any criticism from countries such as the U.S. 

Interestingly enough, not much is known about Ms. Kim – her exact date of birth is unknown, with the best estimations placing her around 1988. 

Furthermore, she is speculated to be one of the youngest daughters of the former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who had multiple other children with several women. 

This serves as an example for how powerful of a woman Ms. Kim is within North Korea and could possibly become an even more influential figure in geopolitical affairs in years to come.

Despite Kim Jong Un’s immense presence in the media and public life, his older sister Kim Yo Jong has remained a mysterious figure since her earliest years. 

She generally evaded the spotlight while her brother merited more attention as his reign started to unfold. 

In 2009, she was a potential candidate for North Korean leadership after her father suffered a myriad of strokes, complimented by the rumor of her being named heir alongside Kim Jong Un and their older brother, Kim Jong Chol. 

Her presence was again noted when she attended an Eric Clapton concert with her brother in Singapore in 2011. 

As speculation surrounding her persona remains strong due to the persistence of secrecy with regards to her marital status, one can conclude that Kim Yo Jong is indeed poised for an eminent position within the next few years.

Ms. Kim’s declaration and the prestige of her position as a female leader in North Korea caught the attention of leaders around the world, including in the United States. 

Her role in North Korea diplomacy soon intensified, as she served as a confidante and adviser to her brother during unprecedented face-to-face meetings with President Donald Trump. 

During these important diplomatic trips, Ms. Kim traveled to Singapore, Vietnam, and to the inter-Korean border to accompany her brother. 

She played an essential part in these historic negotiations; her influence serves as a reminder of women’s power within international politics.

Kim Yo-jong was thrust into public life in late 2014 when it was reported that she had married Choe Song, the second son of government official Choe Ryong-hae. 

Due to their shared alma mater of Kim Il-sung University, speculation was widespread that Song was either an official at Room 39 of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) or a member of a military unit responsible for guarding North Korea’s leader. 

Further speculations were put to rest in May 2015 when it was reported that Kim Yo-jong had given birth to a child. 

Her status as mother-to-be made news once again during the 2018 Winter Olympics when she is said to have disclosed her pregnancy; interestingly enough, outside attention shifted away from the reclusive nation’s leader and focused on his sister instead.
