Personal Statement

My name is Miko Brown and my goal is to row competitively in college.  I have many achievements in rowing. My sophomore year I was stroke seat in the Lightweight Men's 4 and we won the C Final at Youth Nationals, earning our spot as the 13th fastest in the nation.  That season I went 6:53 on my 2k as a lightweight sophomore. Since then, I have become a heavyweight rower and I am getting faster, stronger, and taller every day. I am currently the stroke seat of the Men’s Varsity 8 and I have achieved this spot in the boat due to my work ethic and leadership. I do 15,000-30,000 meters of extra erging each week before practice because I want to be the best rower I can be. I am experiencing rapid improvement in both erg test times and in technique. At the end of my Junior year, this work resulted in a bronze regional medal at Southwest Junior Championships steering as stroke seat in the 4-.

I have been very lucky to row under former UC Berkeley rower Willem Whalen during all my years on varsity, and under former UC Berkeley coach Patrick Schulkers this season. The different tips that they have each given me have proven that I am a coachable athlete and have improved my rowing technique immensely.

Outside of rowing, I excel in the classroom with a 5.0 GPA currently in my junior year and an unweighted GPA of 4.0 throughout high school. It is important to me to support my community so I volunteer at rowing camps, river cleanups, and homeless shelters.
