What is Nancy Walton Laurie’s net worth?
Nancy Walton Laurie, heiress to the Walmart fortune, has a net worth of $9 billion, making her one of the wealthiest individuals in Nevada. Born in 1951 in Versailles, Missouri, Laurie is the daughter of James “Bud” Walton, the younger brother of Walmart co-founder Sam Walton.
Laurie graduated from the University of Memphis, where she met her future husband, Bill Laurie. Sam Walton and Bud Walton co-founded Walmart in 1962, with Sam as the majority shareholder and in charge of marketing, while Bud focused on the company’s retail spaces and building new stores.
Today, Walmart Inc is one of the most successful retail chains in the world, with a market cap of around $400 billion, over 2.2 million employees worldwide, and annual revenue of more than $500 billion.
Bud Walton’s Death and Inheritance
Bud Walton died on March 21, 1995 at the age of 73 after experiencing a stomach aneurysm while on a fishing trip in the Caribbean. At the time of his death Bud was worth $1 billion and was roughly the 83rd-richest person in the United States.
Upon Bud’s death, Nancy and her sister Ann Walton Kroenke inherited his shares in the company. When Sam died three years earlier in 1992, he was worth $8.6 billion. If Sam and Bud were alive today they would be worth a combined $250 billion and they would receive billions in dividends every year.
Nancy and Bill Laurie’s Real Estate Holdings
Nancy and Bill Laurie own a $20 million mansion in Henderson, Las Vegas, and additional mansions in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, and Columbia, Missouri. Their Bel-Air property is a 9-10 acre compound made up of around a dozen parcels. They have spent at least $60 million assembling the compound over the past 20 years, which may make it the largest individual property in Bel-Air in terms of acreage. In 2015, they filed a lawsuit against Mohamed Hadid, alleging that a retaining wall he installed at a property in Bel-Air damaged roots of a eucalyptus tree on their property and demanded $90,000 in damages. Nancy and Bill Laurie previously owned the St. Louis Blues hockey team, and Nancy is the President and founder of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and the owner of Columbia Performing Arts Centre in Missouri.
Paige Laurie’s Cheating Scandal Causes Fallout for University of Missouri
In 2001, Nancy and Bill donated $25 million to the University of Missouri to pay for the construction of a new sports arena. The arena was to be named after their daughter Paige Laurie, who did not attend the school. However, a few years after the donation, Paige was accused of paying a fellow student at USC to do her homework. In the fallout of the scandal, Paige relinquished her diploma to USC.
Further concerns arose for the University of Missouri as they realized the sports arena was named after someone who cheated her way through a different school. As a result, her name was eventually removed from the stadium.
