Given the current state of the Phoenix Suns' roster, including three players on max contracts, they may use their first pick in the 2024 NBA draft in trade talks in an attempt to improve their title chances for next season.

Per The Athletic's Sam Vecenie, there's a belief from some people around the NBA that the Suns could move the No. 22 overall pick "given their all-in approach and owner Mat Ishbia's aggressive posture."

General manager James Jones has definitively said that Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal won't be traded this offseason.

There were some rumblings that Booker might seek a trade in the wake of the Suns' first-round playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but ESPN's Zach Lowe recently said on his podcast there is no indication a trade request is coming.

Given the restrictions Phoenix is under due to the second-apron rules, the No. 22 pick is the best asset the front office has to dangle in trade talks if none of its top three players are going to be dealt.

ESPN's Bobby Marks noted the Suns are already looking at spending an estimated $325 million next season between payroll and luxury tax, with the possibility they could add an additional $55 million in tax payments if they were to re-sign Royce O'Neale on a deal worth $10 million.

Finding ways to add depth will be essential for the Suns this offseason. O'Neale is their top free agent, with Eric Gordon, Josh Okogie, Drew Eubanks and Damion Lee all holding player options for next season.

Even though this draft class isn't regarded as having great star talent, but there is quality depth for teams outside of the top of the lottery looking for help.

New head coach Mike Budenholzer will be tasked with trying to make this roster work after Frank Vogel was unable to find the right formula for postseason success.

If there is the right role player available to the Suns, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Jones make an aggressive move. But they could also try to do what the Golden State Warriors did last offseason when they had limited financial resources available because of how expensive their roster was.

Golden State kept its first-round pick and used it to select Brandin Podziemski. He had two years of college experience before entering the NBA. It likely helped make his transition to the league easier, as he turned into a valuable role player for head coach Steve Kerr right away.

The Suns have a lot of big decisions to make this offseason after a frustrating 2023-24 season that ended with a sweep at the hands of the T-Wolves in the first round of the playoffs.
