San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak is expected to be named the New Orleans Saints' offensive coordinator after Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The move has been expected in recent weeks to the point that the Saints have already begun putting together an offensive staff for Kubiak with the anticipated hiring of quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and offensive line coach John Benton, per Pelissero.
Kubiak's 49ers will look to win their first Super Bowl since 1994 on Sunday when they take on a Kansas City Chiefs team that will be playing in their fourth Super Bowl in the past five seasons.
The 36-year-old Kubiak is the son of former longtime NFL player and coach Gary Kubiak, who won multiple Super Bowls during his career.
After a lengthy run as the Denver Broncos' backup quarterback behind John Elway, Gary Kubiak was quarterbacks coach for the 49ers' Super Bowl-winning team in 1994 and went on to win two Super Bowls as the Broncos' offensive coordinator.
He was the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013 and of the Broncos from 2015 to 2016, leading Denver to a win in Super Bowl 50.
Prior to joining the 49ers this season, Klint spent several years on the Minnesota Vikings' and Broncos' coaching staffs.
He was Minnesota's offensive quality control coach, quarterbacks coach and then finally offensive coordinator for one season in 2021.
For the Broncos, he started as an offensive assistant on his father's staff in 2016, served in that role for three years, and after leaving for the Vikings, he returned as Denver's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022.
While Kubiak arguably had mixed success, one season in San Francisco worked wonders, as he rebuilt his value and reputation under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
As a rookie seventh-round pick in 2022, quarterback Brock Purdy showed flashes of potentially being San Francisco's long-term answer under center, but he seemed to remove all doubt this season.
With Kubiak playing a key role in coaching him up, Purdy was an NFL MVP finalist and Pro Bowler, completing 69.4 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Purdy also led the league in yards per attempt (9.6), quarterback rating (113.0) and QBR (72.7).
In New Orleans, Kubiak will have the opportunity to work with a veteran quarterback in Derek Carr, who was a four-time Pro Bowler in nine seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders and was solid in his first season with he Saints in 2023.
Although New Orleans fell just short of winning the NFC South with a 9-8 record, Carr completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and just eight picks.
The Saints also ranked ninth in the NFL in scoring with 23.6 points per game, but head coach Dennis Allen decided to make a change anyway, parting ways with OC Pete Carmichael.
Assuming the Saints don't make any major changes, Kubiak will have a ton of offensive talent to work with next season in Carr, running back Alvin Kamara, wide receivers Chris Olave, Michael Thomas and Rashid Shaheed and all-around offensive weapon Taysom Hill.
It may not quite be at the same level as the 49ers' skill-position group, but the Saints should have enough pieces in place to take a big leap forward under Kubiak in 2024.
