Jimmy Garoppolo's time with the Las Vegas Raiders appears to be coming to an end.
The team is expected to release the veteran quarterback before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He would earn an $11.25 million bonus if he were still on the roster at that point.
The news comes after Schefter reported Friday that the NFL is suspending Garoppolo two games for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy when he used "a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption."
Garoppolo is not expected to appeal the decision and will miss the first two games of the 2024 season, according to Schefter.
The 32-year-old signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders ahead of the 2023 season when Josh McDaniels was head coach and Dave Ziegler was the general manager.
With both McDaniels and Ziegler having been fired and replaced with Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco, the Raiders have "no connection or commitment to Garoppolo," Schefter wrote.
Aidan O'Connell and Brian Hoyer will be the only quarterbacks on the roster when Garoppolo is released, though the Raiders are interested in adding a signal-caller in the 2024 draft.
Schefter reported that "some around the league" believe Las Vegas "could make a strong play" to move up from No. 13 in order to land a quarterback.
USC's Caleb Williams, UNC's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels are widely considered the three best quarterbacks available in this year's class, though Michigan's J.J. McCarthy has also generated plenty of hype.
The Bleacher Report NFL Scouting Department has Williams, Maye and Daniels going one, two and three, respectively, in its latest mock draft.
As for Garoppolo, he'll be looking for his third team in as many seasons. Before joining the Raiders, he spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. The New England Patriots selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft.
One of the biggest drawbacks for Garoppolo is his injury history. He has only played at least 15 games in a season twice in his career and was eventually benched during the 2023 season.
Garoppolo appeared in seven games for the Raiders last season, making six starts. He completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns against nine interceptions.
It's unclear which teams might have interest in signing Garoppolo this offseason, though he shouldn't have a difficult time finding a new home.
