Personal Statement

At 5’9, 155 lbs, I know I may not look like the ideal baseball player. However, what you will find is that I’ve been blessed with brilliant coaches, amazing teammates, natural ability, family who’ve always shared my passion for this brilliant game of baseball and the understanding that good is the enemy of great. It is my family who has taught me this: it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but it’s the size of fight in the dog. I was a late bloomer, started playing baseball at the age of nine. All memories have taught lessons, but there are two I cherish above all others. My first hit: an infield single to the shortstop. A more personal memory: my Mom and Dad holding back tears as they read a 2014 letter from USSSA baseball, naming me one of the best “Major Division” baseball players in the country.

To succeed, you have to set goals. My goal as a freshman was to make the JV team as a starter and through dedication and hard-work it happened. Both my freshman and sophomore year, I hit in the lead-off and was the starting center fielder; as well as being named team captain for both years. Another goal. My sophomore year, I led the team in walks, steals, and a .470 on-base percentage. I currently hold a 3.3 GPA at a school that is consistently ranked as one of the top 25 academic schools in the country. Wherever baseball takes me, I hope it’s to a school whose baseball program not only measures talent and ability, but also the size of the fight in the dog. I believe in honesty, integrity, loyalty, and hard work. To be upfront and say I do not come from a wealthy family doesn’t embarrass me. When I ask for financial assistance, it does not humiliate me. It humbles me. I love the game of baseball. It is my passion. My escape. My solace. I’m looking for a school that will believe in me. A school that will help me pursue a career in sports medicine. When after baseball, I can continue to take care of and heal all athletes, from student to professional.

I’m Parker Walden. Class of 2019. I really appreciate you taking the time to read my personal statement and I hope we get a chance to speak soon.
