Schauffele only holds a one-stroke lead, which on a weekend that has frequently featured rounds in the mid-60s, means little. Clark appeared to have a fairly commanding lead entering Day 3, but a disappointing score of 70 dropped him from first place.
Other golfers needed Clark to cool off, and he did.
Schauffele remained hot and carded seven birdies in a bogey-free round to record his second score of 65 this weekend. The question is whether he can avoid the sorts of miscues that plagued Clark on Saturday.
Thankfully, weather shouldn't be much of a factor. According to weather.com, only a small chance of rain exists, and winds should be light. That's great news for golfers out front because, depending on the timing and severity, weather can become an equalizer—as we've seen in past years at Ponte Vedra Beach.
Brian Harman, Maverick McNealy and Matt Fitzpatrick are close behind the two leaders, and it wouldn't be a shock to see one of them claim victory if Schauffele and Clark slip at all.
It's also still too early to count out Scheffler, who is looking to become the first golfer in the tournament's 50-year history to successfully defend his title. The world No. 1-ranked golfer has been battling a neck injury that he suffered early on Friday.
"I did what I could to stay in the tournament today, and hopefully it'll loosen up and then I'll be able to make somewhat normal swings tomorrow," Scheffler said after the second round, per CNN's Jack Bantock.
However, Scheffler rebounded on Saturday with four birdies and a bogey for his third sub-70 round of the weekend.
If anyone can overcome a five-stroke deficit in a single day, it's Scheffler.
However, the prediction here is that Clark regains the form he showed over the first two days to put immense pressure on Schauffele, and ultimately, come out on top.
