UFC 86's main event featured a great fight for the UFC light heavyweight title between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin. It was a great fight overall so I'm not going to waste anyones time, and get to the round by round recap and how I scored the fight.
Forrest started the action with a couple good leg kicks to Rampage's left knee. Rampage landed a good combo with a left hook and uppercut before Forrest closed into a Thai Clinch. Later in the round, Rampage landed another good combo with a left hook, right hook, an uppercut, and another left hook that hurt Forrest a little.
Then Rampage landed a huge counter uppercut on Forrest that hurt Forrest and knocked him down. Rampage then jumped into Forrest's guard and Forrest recovered a little. Forrest attempted to get up while Rampage was still in his guard and Rampage landed a couple nice punches. The round finished with Forrest throwing but missing on a big uppercut.
I give Rampage the 1st round by a score of 10-9.
Forrest again started the action by landing on a good leg kick to Forrest's left knee which clearly hurt Rampage, Rampage was stumbling on that knee. While Forrest was trying to continue working on Rampage's left knee with kicks, Rampage shot in to try for a take down. Rampage left his head on Forrest's side and Forrest got Rampage in a pretty tight guillotine while throwing knee's at Rampage's head. Griffin let the choke go and got in Rampage's half guard. Forrest then later took side control over Rampage and tried for a Americana but failed. Forrest then later mounted Rampage and thats how the round finished with Forrest beating Rampage from the mount.
Forrest totally dominated Rampage in the 2nd round. Forrest takes this round 10-8.
The round started with Rampage dodging a few of Forrest's leg kicks that hurt Rampage earlier in the fight. Both Rampage and Forrest, missed on their shots for the first couple minutes in the round. Rampage then connected with a good uppercut combo on Forrest. Forrest then connected with a leg kick that connected high on Rampage's left thigh.
Forrest then moved in on Rampage while he was throwing and Rampage countered and nailed Forrest with a left hook which knocked Forrest back. The two continued throwing on each other but didn't hardly connect on any of them. Rampage connected on a devastating right hook body shot to the back of Forrest's ribs, a very good body shot by Rampage. Forrest then missed on a leg kick and superman punch combo.
Forrest continued in on Rampage and Rampage knocked him back on a left hook. Forrest got his balance back and charged Rampage and hit him with a good combo which knocked Rampage back. The last 10 seconds of the round ended with both Rampage and Forrest throwing combo's on each other. Rampage landed a couple good left hooks on Forrest and Forrest landed a good shot on Rampage to finish up the round.
This round could have gone either way but I think Forrest landed a more shots than Rampage did in this round. I give this round to Forrest 10-9, barely.
Forrest missed on a couple leg kicks to start the round. Rampage hit Forrest with a good uppercut/hook combo. While Rampage was throwing on Forrest, he started throwing back on Rampage. Rampage then continued in on Forrest and got him with 2 very nice uppercuts and a hook. Forrest tied Rampage up to prevent him from throwing anymore good shots on him and tried to take Rampage down. But, in doing so, Forrest lost his balance and Rampage ended up taking Forrest down. Forrest immediately put Rampage in his guard and the two rolled around and battled for position for a while. While in Forrest's guard, Rampage landed a couple of shots but not anything big.
Forrest then caght Rampage in a triangle choke while Rampage was in Forrest's guard. Forrest had the triangle in place and Rampage used his brute strength and picked Forrest up off the ground. To prevent Rampage from slamming Forrest to the ground, Forrest unlocked the triangle choke in mid air and let go. Rampage then got back into Forrest's guard.
While Forrest was trying to get back to his feet, Rampage connected on a great right uppercut and left hook which knocked Forest back. While Forrest was throwing a couple punches on Rampage, Rampage countered with a right hook which landed on Forrest. Both fighters landed one or two shots on each other in that little exchange.
With just under a minute to go in the round, Rampage connected on a big left hook and right hook. The left hook connected on a cut that Forrest already had earlier in the fight and opened it up some more. Forrest then landed a couple good shots on Rampage in that exchange once again. Then, with less than ten seconds to go in the round, Rampage connected on a couple more good hooks which rocked Forrest a little.
This round was one of the most exciting rounds of the fight. While Forrest did have Rampage in a triangle choke, Rampage got out of it and landed more shots in this round than Forrest did. Rampage takes this round 10-9.
This is the final round of this great fight between Rampage and Forrest for the UFC Light Heavyweight title.
For the first fifty seconds of the round, both fighters just circled each other, once again trying to gauge each other. Then, Forrest threw a 1-2 combo which Rampage countered with a left hook which landed and rocked Forrest a little. Forrest continued in and threw another 1-2 combo but followed it up with a good leg kick on Rampage's hurt left knee. The two fighters continued to throw a couple 1-2 combos every now and then on each other for a minute until Forrest connected with a right hand to Rampage's chest. It didn't affect Rampage any.
Forrest then hit Rampage with a big leg kick to his bad left knee once again. Rampage then hit Forrest with a good right hand then Forrest countered with a right hand himself. Rampage then threw a jab to Forrest's head then followed it up with a right uppercut to Forrest's body. Forest then missed on a 1-2 combo but followed it up with a big leg kick to Rampage's head, Rampage seemed to block it for the most part but it still landed a little.
Both fighters circled around the ring for about 30 seconds until Forrest hit Rampage with a right hand. Rampage then hit Forrest with a left hook to the side of Forrest's head and Forrest countered with a good stiff jab on Rampage. Forrest then once again connected on a nice leg kick to Rampage's already hurt left knee. Rampage countered it with a left uppercut to Forrest's ribs. Then Forrest blocked a left hook thrown by Rampage to his head.
Rampage then missed on a superman punch and Forrest tied him up inside and threw a couple good knees to Rampage's body. Forrest then hit on another leg kick to Rampage's knee and followed it up with a good right hand that connected. Rampage then started to throw a couple of combos but missed. Rampage once again hit Forrest with a nice body shot. Rampage followed it up with a big uppercut inside on Forrest. The last ten seconds of the fight was just both fighters throwing like crazy and Forrest tying Rampage up and throwing some knees to his body to finish up the fight.
This final round, I would give to Forrest 10-9.
So I have the fight as follows:
1st round, 10-9 Rampage
2nd round, 10-8 Forrest
3rd round, 10-9 Forrest
4th round, 10-9 Rampage
5th round, 10-9 Forrest
For a total of 48-46 Forrest Griffin over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
The judges scored this fight 49-46, 48-46, and 48-46, all for Griffin. Griffin won the belt from Rampage via unanimous decision. The judges that scored this fight 48-46 got it right, but 49-46 is way to lopsided for this fight. I have watched this fight three times now and I still cannot see that lopsided of a victory to cause the score to be 49-46.
Both fighters came into the fight in excellent shape. Both fighters were ready for the fight. Forrest just came out and was the better technical fighter than Rampage and he was more patient than Rampage.
Rampage will get another chance at the title sooner rather than later. I, for one, hope we get to see a Jackson vs. Griffin 2 for the belt once again.
