Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel apologized on social media Wednesday night after an awkward and inappropriate interaction (4:18 mark) with WNBA top overall pick and new Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.

Gregg Doyel @GreggDoyelStar

Today in my uniquely oafish way, while welcoming @CaitlinClark22 to Indy, I formed my hands into her signature 🫶. My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better.

The exchange came during a press conference and centered on the heart sign Clark will make at the end of games, which she directs toward her family.

There was quickly a backlash regarding Doyel's unprofessional behavior:

Shireen Ahmed @_shireenahmed_

Almost every one of my women colleagues & students in sport media and sports journalism are sharing that clip of Gregg Doyel and Caitlin Clark with disgust. We are rightly furious and fed up.
His creds should be revoked and offered to an unentitled journalist who respects women.

Chris Williamson @CWilliamson44

I would totally understand if the Fever revoked Gregg Doyel's credentials for this creepy back and forth with Caitlin.

Peter Edmiston @peteredmiston

Nasty business from Gregg Doyel here. Just try being normal and not a creepy weirdo. Men, we gotta do better. Don't let this slide if you see it. And men of a certain age - y'all really have to come to grips with women playing a prominent role in the sports you consume and cover

Heather Burnside 🐦 @HeatherRadio

Gregg Doyel is THE reporter for the @indystar and has a Pulitzer so yeah, more women should be covering women's sports

Whatever Doyel's intentions, he seemingly made a young woman feel uncomfortable and made himself the center of the story on a day that was about Clark.
