The Amory’s ground floor corner houses Ruka, a locally owned Peruvian-Japanese restaurant. Decked out like an ancient temple in the jungle, and with BB King’s blues boogie chugging away, the food proved only half the fun here. Lomi-lomi, a Hawaiian styled salmon crudo sushi roll, had a tangy, rich passion fruit brown butter; the fragrant avocado and Asian pear roll was topped with crispy Florida rock shrimp; and the solterito salad had quinoa and edamame flavored with dajing bean curd and feta paste.

Blake’s corner has one of Massachusetts’ oldest and best coffee roasters, George Howell. Both eateries have hotel lobby and street entrances and are very much community resources, too.

Ruka provides room service from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., leaving Howell’s as the place to grab breakfast: the coffee is excellent and the pastries hard to resist, but for something a little healthier, try the avocado wholewheat toast.

The Godfrey Bar in the lobby is small, but a great spot to huddle over well-made cocktails, local beer, or a glass of wine.
