Benson made his fortune through a variety of business ventures, including investing in local banks during his time as the owner of several automobile dealerships. Despite his massive success, he continued to retain ownership of several car dealerships in the greater New Orleans and San Antonio areas.
Benson courted controversy in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina made the New Orleans Superdome impossible for the Saints to play that season. He temporarily relocated the team to San Antonio, but residents were outraged when the mayor claimed Benson planned to permanently move the team. Benson denied the claim, stating he was committed to keeping the Saints in New Orleans “forever, as long as the community commits to me.”
