Roberto De Zerbi was born on June 6, 1979, as a former Italian footballer and current Brighton & Hove Albion manager.

At AC Milan, De Zerbi began his professional career. He was on loan to clubs at lesser levels for four seasons. He spent the 1999–2000 Serie C1 season in Como with Milan's Luca Saudati and Alberto Comazzi. He made his Serie A debut with Napoli, who had acquired him for €2.5 million from Calcio Catania.

The 30-year-old offensive midfielder was loaned out to CFR Cluj by Napoli on February 8 of that year, and on August 31, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Liga 1 champions. In November 2013, De Zerbi began working as a coach for Serie D amateur team Darfo Boario.

De Zerbi signed a six-month contract with amateurs Trento in January 2013 after his deal with CFR Cluj expired, and at the end of the campaign, he officially retired. He accepted a job offer to take over as head coach of his former Lega Pro team, Foggia, in July 2014. Foggia was where he won the 2016 Coppa Italia Lega Pro and nearly missed promotion after losing 5-3 on aggregate to Pisa in the playoff finals.

Following Davide Ballardini's mutually agreed-upon departure from Serie A club Palermo on September 6, 2016, due to differences with the board, De Zerbi was named the team's new head coach. However, the Sicilians' time under his leadership went out poorly, with seven straight losses and no home points in three months.

He was ultimately fired on November 30, 2016, and former team captain Eugenio Corini took his place after a dramatic penalty shootout loss in a home game against Serie B club Spezia. De Zerbi was named manager of Benevento, a newcomer to Serie A, on October 23, 2017. He received plaudits for his possession-based, offensive play style and transfer dealings, even if the team was demoted back to Serie B at the end of the season. The athlete was named manager of Sassuolo on June 13, 2018.

De Zerbi was introduced as the new head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League on May 25, 2021. He defeated Dynamo Kyiv on September 22 to win the Ukrainian Super Cup for 2021, making him the first Italian manager to take home the trophy. On September 18, 2022, Zerbi signed a four-year contract to become Brighton & Hove Albion's new head coach in the Premier League. 

On October 1, he took charge of his debut match in England, a 3-3 away draw against Liverpool in which Leandro Trossard became the first player from Brighton to score a hat-trick in the Premier League.
