He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1962 and started his professional acting career with the New York Shakespeare Festival, where he appeared in 15 plays.
In 1966, Devane played Robert F. Kennedy in the off-Broadway satire “MacBird!” and from 1967 to 1969, he appeared in three episodes of the police drama television series “N.Y.P.D.”
