For the first time since WrestleMania 28 and 29, The Showcase of the Immortals will be headlined by the same match in consecutive years.
Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns will become the first match-up since The Rock vs. John Cena in 2012 and '13 to headline back-to-back WrestleManias, a testament to WWE Creative's ability to keep the rivalry alive and the fans' desire to see The American Nightmare finish his story by winning the one title that eluded his legendary father, the late "American Dream" Dusty Rhodes.
A year ago, Rhodes came within seconds of dethroning Reigns and ending his historic run as champion, only for Solo Sikoa to interfere and cost him the victory. The outcome shocked a wrestling world that was certain the babyface was taking the title.
Since that night, Rhodes underwent an arduous climb back up the WWE mountain, overcoming the oppressive Brock Lesnar, fending off The Judgment Day, and becoming the first repeat winner of the Royal Rumble match since "Stone Cold" Steve Austin accomplished the feat in 1997 and '98.
The journey was not without its hiccups, including the tease of a Reigns vs. The Rock main event that was quickly rejected by fans in favor of Rhodes finishing his story, but the match most expected back in January is back on.
The question is whether WWE learned from last year and is prepared to put the title on Rhodes, giving fans the happy ending they were robbed of in Los Angeles.
If not, the goodwill the company has built up by way of an electric road to WrestleMania may be extinguished in short order.
